About the Author
"The best entrepreneurs are those who have mastered a classroom full of moody children the day after Halloween." That's the core belief of the book’s author, Andy Givens. Andy isn't just an expert on the subject; he lived the journey: a highly decorated educator with over 22 years of experience in middle and high schools, including recognition as his school's Teacher of the Year and a recipient of the prestigious REB Award for teaching excellence.
Andy knows the Sunday night dread and the financial tightrope teachers walk intimately. Before his real estate career, he experienced the burnout of trying to survive on a teacher’s salary. The year before getting his real estate license, he taught night school four nights a week and still barely kept up with the bills. He was exhausted, and his family time suffered, leading him and his wife, Lafonya, to realize this schedule was simply not sustainable, especially as they looked forward to starting a family.
This financial pressure was his "why." It fueled his transition and channeled his passion into entrepreneurship, which now informs his work teaching the subject to high school students in Henrico County, Virginia, where he runs a specialty program that helps them launch their own ventures. His expertise is backed by his successful 11-year career as a realtor, where he has guided hundreds of clients to homeownership.
This dual life gives him a unique, street-smart perspective. He teaches theory, but he also runs multiple successful enterprises right alongside his students and understands the stresses of balancing family, teaching, and running a successful business. He’s learned the hard lessons of balancing multiple jobs and responsibilities. When his daughter, Arabella, was asked in kindergarten what he did for a living, she told her teacher he "teaches something with houses." Her perception perfectly summarizes how his dual worlds sometimes mesh in strange ways.
When he's not teaching, closing a deal, or writing, Andy loves reading and traveling to new countries as often as possible. He lives in Richmond, Virginia, with his family. On many occasions, he has been approached by teachers with a great idea for a business, but who just didn’t know how to get started. This book was a result of those conversations. Andy firmly believes that teachers are the most underestimated entrepreneurs on the planet and that a little help in starting a business can provide the increased income and scheduling flexibility every teacher needs and deserves.
